When purchasing a digital camera, make sure it has rechargeable batteries. Lithium-Ion.
I would stick with Cannon or Nikon.
We have 3 Cannons. One is a T70 from 20 years ago that takes film. We have a big digital Rebel that you can change lenses. Now we have a pocket size Cannon Powershot. We have had really good report through out the years with all of them.
One thing to remember on zooming, make sure it has a high Optical Zoom. Not a high digital zoom. When you have a high optical zoom, you get a very clear zoom. When the digital zoom is high, it gets grainy. Makes a difference when you enlarge your pictures.

One thing I do know though with the small pocket cameras, the flash does not go very far. That is the only downfall. Not like our professional Digital camera that you can attach a external flash that goes a lot further.
Also, go with a 4 gb card. You can get over 2000 pictures or more depending on the your picture settings.
One last thing, the new pocket cameras have video on them to. You can do short videos. It does take a lot of your memory card. But it is well worth it.

I want to get a Home Security System, which is the best?
Hi I live in the midwest I am looking to get a home security system and monthly monitoring. I want one that is legit, has good customer service and has reliable equipment that will last (not break). I do not want to mess with wireless, or anything that will interfere with my existing wireless networks. Does anyone have a company to recommend or one to avoid?? Any advice at all would help, thanx!
Search local companies first. Not sure which ones would be in your area.
A salesperson can come to your home and give you a quote as to what it will cost to install the system. Get quotes from multiple companis. Also when comparing companies thing to keep in mind are: Monitoring fees, service calls (how much per hour), if a contract is involved and if one is, how long you would have to sign for.
If you want the monitoring not just the system alone (which I highly reccommend getting the monitoring) find out how many operators are working each time. Smaller companies only have one Monitoring Operator on at a time and you don't want your fire alarm to be put on hold cuz he/she was in the bathroom going pee. Lol, sounds silly but its something I consider.
As for equipment not breaking, well things do get old or stuff happens. When it comes to smoke detectors vacuum them out one in awhile. Getting any dust in them can cause them to be less sensitive, cause them to false and also cause them to plain out not work. Also if you have any critter problems in your home such as mice they'll sometimes chew wires which can result in false alarms or troubles on the panel. I've seen this hundreds of times. A wire gets pinched or chewed and we (the monitoring station) receive a trouble alarm and a technician ends up going to the persons house to fix it at about $60/hr plus tax.
Also watch out for silly deals. I've gotten lots of calls at home from companies trying to install a system for free. Sounds great but the problem is they'll do it for free if you sign a 3 year contract and its just a few devices. Few devices meaning one or two doors protected with one Motion Detector. Which is BS because most people have at LEAST 3 doors in their home (garage entrance, front door, patio door) and want a motion in each room. Glassbreak detectors are also good to have. They'll activate if you drop a glass plate for example near it but I've personally never seen one false. Motion detectors and door contacts do false, get old, wear down, go out of alignment.

I would like to install up to four cameras, connected to my home network. Has anybody put together a cheap DIY Surveillance System in their houses? What did you do?
A few specifics:
- I would like to be able to record up to 24 hours of mid to High QualityColor Video.
- I would like Motion Detection to trigger recording, and send an email alert.
- I have a few spare computers I can dedicate to monitoring/recording.
- Wireless would be great, but I can easily run my own ethernet cables, or rca cables.
- Sound is not necessary.
- I can set up complicated systems with no problem if it means saving a few bucks by not getting a fancy all-inclusive surveillance system.
- The ability to watch cameras remotely would be nice.
- I currently have a Linksys N wireless router.

I find it hard to understand what you are hoping to accomplish with this system. As for "baby safety" on stairs, I don't see how you could get to the stairs fast enough to catch a baby falling down them -- a safety gate would be more practical. And who are you planning to watch in the garage and computer room?
